For this show, John and his band dive deep into the canon, creating their version of jazz' most influential recording. Kind of Blue has remained near the top of the jazz charts since it was released on August 17th, 1959, and is still one of the best selling jazz recordings in history. In 2008 it was certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. Rolling Stone ranks it #12 on their list of the 500 greatest recordings of all time.

The album marked a turning point in Miles Davis' career, as he created a new form of jazz with this record. Quieter, more understated, the songs were based on modal themes, and a moody groove replaced the bombastic and frantic bebop trends. One of several times in his career that he re-invented himself, and in the process, pointed the entire genre in a new direction. It is often the first choice to initiate a newcomer to the jazz world because it is so easy to listen to and understand, even as it sets the bar very high for musicianship.

John DePaola is a freelance trumpeter in Orlando, Florida. His style of jazz improvisation radiates warmth and is complimented by his ability to create melodic solos. He performs regularly at jazz societies and varied venues in central and southern Florida. John DePaola's "Take Two" recently hit the #1 slot on the NACC Top Jazz Adds chart.
