Johnbern Thomas is an esteemed drummer who brings a universe of rhythm transcending genres. Raised in Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti, he learned the drums from his father, and his emotionally uplifting approach reflects a unique mélange of neo-soul, swing, and Haitian tradition. His music not only opens horizons but also fosters exploration, creation, harmony, and community building. His foremost objective is to share his music with supporters of jazz who appreciate the spirit of sharing and fraternity, and to continue combining strengths with others for a harmonious cultural development.
Throughout his career, Johnbern has had the honor of sharing the stage with many of today’s top musicians, including Aaron Goldberg, Jean Caze, Grammy winning Felipe Lamoglia, Grammy winning Zach Brock of Snarky Puppy, the legendary Bennie Wallace,Grammy-nominated Godwin Louis, Grammy-winning Miguel Zenon, Don Braden, and Julie Michel, among others. His respect for the level of musicianship and artistry he brings to the stage is a testament to his collaborative successes. Furthermore, Johnbern has been recognized with awards from various organizations, including one from the most prestigious jazz festival in the Caribbean (PAPJAZZ), in recognition of his contributions to jazz music in Haiti.
Johnbern’s participation in numerous cultural and artistic endeavors, particularly jazz festivals across Martinique, Guadeloupe, the United States, Asia, Suriname, Europe, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti, has garnered widespread appreciation and has allowed him to build a large, loyal following across diverse regions.
As part of his commitment to the jazz community and musical education, Johnbern has produced jazz soirées and actively works to amplify the voices of youth while promoting jazz in all its dimensions as a means of contributing to the development of his country. He's the founder of Haiti Jazz Promo, a platform dedicated to this mission, as well as the creator of a music school program in Sakala, the largest ghetto in Haiti, Cite Soleil. This initiative not only aims to remove guns from the hands of children but also to break down barriers and provide greater access to the rich world of jazz music.
In June 2017, Johnbern released his first album with the Johnbern Thomas Trio, which has already generated significant buzz across various media platforms,by showcasing the sounds rooted in the Haitian heritage. Since relocating from Haiti to Florida 4 years ago, he fully immersed himself in the local music scene, collaborating with talented musicians and organizing notable events.
